500‑Level Covenant University Student Dies During Football Training, University Confirms

The management of Covenant University has officially confirmed the death of a 500‑level student, Toluwase Jesutunmise, who died following a medical emergency during a football training session on campus.

According to a statement issued by the university’s Vice‑Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, the incident occurred on Monday, when the student complained of leg pain and fatigue while participating in a routine football training drill. Moments later, he was observed gasping for breath by teammates.

Jesutunmise was immediately taken to the university’s medical centre, located close to the training field, where medical personnel began resuscitation efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.

In the statement, Professor Anake described the deceased student as diligent and vibrant, and expressed deep sadness over the loss. The university noted that preliminary indications suggest a previously undisclosed heart condition may have been responsible for the incident.

The management also emphasised that all necessary emergency equipment was available and used appropriately, dismissing allegations of negligence. Condolences were extended to the family, and support for them has continued since being notified of the tragic development.

The incident has sparked discussions on student health monitoring and emergency response measures in tertiary institutions across the country.
